Grades in the AA

A∴A∴, or Argenteum Astrum (Silver Star), is a magical order founded by Aleister Crowley in 1907, focusing on the pursuit of spiritual growth and the attainment of one's True Will. The system is based on the principles of Thelema and is designed to guide aspirants through a structured path of spiritual development.

The A∴A∴ grade system is based on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, which consists of ten spheres (Sephiroth) and the paths connecting them. The grades in Crowley's A∴A∴ are divided into three primary orders, each representing a stage of spiritual development:

Neophyte (0° = 0□) - Associated with the sphere of Malkuth

Zelator (1° = 10□) - Associated with the sphere of Yesod

Practicus (2° = 9□) - Associated with the sphere of Hod

Philosophus (3° = 8□) - Associated with the sphere of Netzach

Adeptus Minor (5° = 6□) - Associated with the sphere of Tiphareth

Adeptus Major (6° = 5□) - Associated with the sphere of Geburah

Adeptus Exemptus (7° = 4□) - Associated with the sphere of Chesed

Magister Templi (8° = 3□) - Associated with the sphere of Binah

Magus (9° = 2□) - Associated with the sphere of Chokmah

Ipsissimus (10° = 1□) - Associated with the sphere of Kether

In addition to the main grades, there is a probationary period called “Student” that precedes the Neophyte grade. As a Student, the aspirant studies foundational texts and demonstrates their commitment to the path before being admitted as a Neophyte.

It is important to note that each grade in A∴A∴ corresponds to specific tasks, practices, and areas of study that the aspirant must complete before progressing to the next level. The progression through these grades is intended to facilitate the aspirant's spiritual growth and development, ultimately leading to the discovery and accomplishment of their True Will.
