The Star Sapphire
The Star Sapphire is a Thelemic ritual devised by Aleister Crowley as a hexagram ritual, equivalent to the traditional Golden Dawn's Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram. It is designed for invoking and banishing planetary and zodiacal energies, and serves as a counterpart to the Star Ruby ritual. The Star Sapphire can be found in Crowley's “The Book of Lies,” also known as Liber XXXVI or Liber 36.
The ritual incorporates elements of Thelemic symbolism and Greek words, as well as gestures and visualisations that call upon the energies associated with the planetary and zodiacal forces. The purpose of the Star Sapphire is to attune the practitioner with the desired energies or to banish unwanted influences, depending on the intention of the ritual.
The Star Sapphire consists of several stages, including:
- The Qabalistic Cross: Similar to the Star Ruby and the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP), the Star Sapphire begins with the Qabalistic Cross, a series of gestures and visualisations intended to align the practitioner with the divine energies and balance the elemental forces within their being.
- The Hexagram Ritual: The practitioner traces hexagrams in the air at each cardinal direction, invoking or banishing the planetary and zodiacal energies as needed. The specific hexagrams and divine names used will vary depending on the intention of the ritual and the energies being invoked or banished.
- The Invocation of the Deities: In this stage, the practitioner calls upon various Thelemic deities, such as Nuit, Hadit, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit, to manifest their presence and assist in the ritual. The practitioner also utters a series of magical words and phrases to further invoke or banish the desired energies.
- The Affirmation of the Law: The ritual concludes with the affirmation of the Law of Thelema, as the practitioner recites the phrases “There is no part of me that is not of the Gods” and “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”
The Star Sapphire ritual is an essential component of Thelemic practice, serving as a means of attuning oneself with the planetary and zodiacal forces and manifesting their energies in one's life. By regularly performing the Star Sapphire, individuals can strengthen their connection to the Thelemic current and harness the power of these cosmic energies for personal growth and transformation.
Ritual Text
The text of the Star Sapphire, also called Liber XXXVI, from Magick, Book 4:
Let the Adept be armed with his Magick Rood [and provided with his Mystic Rose].
In the centre, let him give the L.V.X. signs; or if he know them, if he will and dare do them, and can keep silent about them, the signs of N.O.X. being the signs of Puer, Vir, Puella, Mulier. Omit the sign I.R.
Then let him advance to the East and make the Holy Hexagram, saying:
- “Pater et Mater unus deus Ararita.” (Father and Mother are the one God ARARITA)
Let him go round to the South, make the Holy Hexagram and say:
- “Mater et Filius unus deus Ararita.” (Mother and Son are the one God ARARITA)
Let him go round to the West, make the Holy Hexagram and say:
- “Filius at Filia unus deus Ararita.” (Son and Daughter are the one God ARARITA)
Let him go round to the North, make the Holy Hexagram and then say:
- “Filia et Pater unus deus Ararita.” (Daughter and Father are the one God ARARITA)
Let him then return to the Centre, and so to The Centre of All (making the Rosy Cross as he may know how) saying
- “Ararita Ararita Ararita” (In this the Signs shall be those of Set Triumphant and of Baphomet. Also shall Set appear in the Circle. Let him drink of the Sacrament and let him communicate the same.)
Then let him say:
- Omnia in Duos: Duo in Unum: Unus in Nihil: Haec nec Quatuor nec Omnia nec Duo nec Unus nec Nihil Sunt.
- Gloria Patri et Matri et Filio et Filiae et Spiritui Sancto externo et Spiritui Sancto interno ut erat est erit in saecula Saeculorum sex in uno per nomen Septem in uno Ararita.
- (All in Two; Two in One; One in None; These are neither Four nor All nor Two nor One nor None. Glory be to the Father and the Mother and the Son and the Daughter and the Holy Spirit without and the Holy Spirit within as it was, is, will be for ages and ages six in one through the name seven in one ARARITA.)
Let him then repeat the signs of L.V.X. but not the signs of N.O.X.: for it is not he that shall arise in the Sign of Isis Rejoicing.
