Overview, History, and Development of Thelema

Thelema is a spiritual philosophy and religion founded by the English occultist, poet, and mystic Aleister Crowley (1875-1947). It combines elements of Western esotericism, including Hermeticism, Kabbalah, and ceremonial magic, with Eastern mysticism and various religious traditions. At its core, Thelema emphasises the discovery and fulfilment of one's True Will, the intrinsic purpose and destiny of an individual. Thelemites often employ rituals, meditation, and magical practices to achieve self-realisation and spiritual transformation.

The origins of Thelema can be traced back to 1904 when Aleister Crowley claimed to have received a channeled text from a spiritual entity named Aiwass. This text, titled “The Book of the Law” (Liber AL vel Legis), serves as the foundation of Thelemic philosophy. The book proclaims a new era, the Aeon of Horus, in which humanity would move away from the previous Aeons of Isis (maternal and nature-centred spirituality) and Osiris (patriarchal and dogmatic religions) towards a more individualistic, self-empowered approach to spirituality.

In the years following the reception of “The Book of the Law,” Crowley continued to develop Thelema by integrating various esoteric teachings, spiritual practices, and his personal experiences. He established several organisations to promote Thelemic teachings, including the A∴A∴ (Astrum Argenteum or the Silver Star), which focused on individual spiritual development, and the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), an initiatory magical order that incorporated elements of Freemasonry and other Western mystery traditions.

Throughout his life, Crowley produced an extensive body of written work that expanded upon the principles of Thelema. These texts, referred to as the Holy Books of Thelema, include “Liber AL vel Legis,” “Liber Cordis Cincti Serpente,” “Liber Liberi vel Lapidis Lazuli,” and many others. Crowley also devised various rituals and magical practices, such as the Gnostic Mass (a central rite of the OTO), the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, and the Star Ruby ritual.

Following Crowley's death in 1947, Thelema continued to evolve, attracting new adherents and inspiring a variety of spiritual movements. The OTO and A∴A∴ remain active organisations today, while other groups, such as the Temple of Thelema, the College of Thelema, and the Typhonian Order, have developed their own interpretations and practices based on Crowley's teachings.

In popular culture, Thelema has had a significant impact, influencing artists, musicians, and writers across various genres. Notable figures such as filmmaker Kenneth Anger, musicians David Bowie and Genesis P-Orridge, and writers Robert Anton Wilson and Grant Morrison have all drawn inspiration from or incorporated aspects of Thelema into their works.

Today, Thelema continues to be a vibrant and evolving spiritual tradition, encompassing a diverse range of beliefs, practices, and interpretations, reflecting the dynamic nature of Crowley's teachings and the ongoing quest for self-discovery and spiritual transformation.

Several Thelemic orders and organisations exist today, dedicated to preserving and advancing the teachings of Aleister Crowley and the spiritual philosophy of Thelema. Some of the most notable groups include:

• Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO): The OTO is an international initiatory organisation that promotes the study and practice of Thelema, incorporating elements of Freemasonry and other Western mystery traditions. The OTO offers a structured system of initiation and progression through various degrees, with the ultimate aim of guiding members to discover and fulfil their True Will.

• A∴A∴ (Astrum Argenteum or Silver Star): The A∴A∴ is a spiritual organisation focusing on individual spiritual development and the attainment of enlightenment through the study and practice of Crowley's magical and mystical teachings. The A∴A∴ utilises a graded system of initiation, with each aspirant working under the guidance of a more advanced member, known as a “neophyte.”

• Temple of Thelema: Founded by Phyllis Seckler (Soror Meral) and James A. Eshelman in 1987, the Temple of Thelema is a Thelemic organisation that emphasises the practical application of magical and mystical techniques for personal growth and self-transformation. The Temple of Thelema offers a structured curriculum and a system of initiation based on the principles of Thelema and the teachings of Crowley.

• College of Thelema: Established by Phyllis Seckler in 1973, the College of Thelema is an educational institution dedicated to the study and practice of Thelema, with a particular focus on the teachings of Aleister Crowley and the A∴A∴. The College offers courses, workshops, and publications aimed at helping students develop their understanding of Thelema and their own spiritual path.

• Typhonian Order: Founded by English occultist Kenneth Grant in 1955, the Typhonian Order is a Thelemic organisation that explores the darker and more esoteric aspects of Crowley's teachings, as well as incorporating elements of other magical traditions, such as the Draconian current and the work of Austin Osman Spare. The Typhonian Order is known for its focus on extraterrestrial and inter-dimensional entities, emphasising the transformative potential of contact with these beings.
